20 October 1862: “FRIENDS, TO THE RESCUE!!”

Item description: This broadside, which includes appeals from Governor Zebulon B. Vance, Surgeon General Edward Warren, and Assistant Quartermaster James Sloan, announces the State of North Carolina’s dire need of donations from private citizens to help clothe and shoe its troops. The dearth of supplies is blamed on “speculation and extortion,” and the announcement goes on to warn that North Carolina’s troops, who are “ragged, cold, and bare-foot,” will not stand a chance against “the splendidly equipped columns, of the enemy.”
