23 December 1862: “My darling wife”

Item description: Photograph, taken 23 December 1862, of Martha “Mattie” Ready, the daughter of Colonel Charles Ready Jr., a former U.S. Congressman. Just ten days earlier Mattie Ready married John Hunt Morgan, a colonel with the 2nd Kentucky Cavalry until his promotion to brigadier general in the Confederate Army following a victory at the battle of Hartsville on 7 December 1862. The Ready-Morgan romance and wedding was the talk of Murfreesboro, Tenn., because of the social prominence of the bride’s family and the groom’s reputation for daring raids against the enemy.

Item citation: From the John Hunt Morgan Papers #2842,  Southern Historical Collection, Wilson Library, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
