Item description: Letter, 16 January 1863, from William S. Pettigrew to Dr. A. Palmer regarding the hire of a family of Pettigrew’s slaves.
Haywood, Chatham Co., N.C.
Jan. 16, 1863
Dr. A. Palmer,
After an absence of nearly three weeks I returned to this place on Tuesday last, and was glad to find that you had remitted to Mr. Elias Bryan the amount ($80.) due for the hire of Allen & his family. Mr. Bryan handed me the remittance on the evening of my arrival. He informed me that he had sent to you a receipt for the same. This you will please enclose to me, and I will return it to him. Your note for the hire of the negroes, I deposited with Mr. Hooker at the Gulf with the request that he would deliver it to you as soon as the amount due for the hire had been remitted to the care of Mr. Bryan. I presume Mr. Hooker has complied with this request.
Allen informs me that himself and his family have not, as yet, received all the clothing due them for the past year. My impression is that they are yet without their winter clothes, blankets, or quilts, and one pair of shoes each. I hope you will pardon me for troubling you with this application for these articles of clothing, but as they are in need of them, I would be not a little obliged if you would forward them to me, to the care of Mr. Elias Bryan at Haywood as soon as it may be in your power. I trust you will find it convenient to send them in the course of a few days.
