16 July 1863: “In the name of reason, of suffering humanity, and of the religion which we profess…bring about an honorable peace.”

Item Description: Letter, 16 July 1863, to the editor of the Raleigh Standard, from “A Southern Man” (attributed to the famous secessionist, R.S. Donnell). In the letter, Donnell reflects on the history of secession, comments on the state of the Civil War, and ultimately calls for an “honorable peace” and the establishment of a national convention to settle the dispute.
