Item description: Letter, dated 2 October 1863, from W. Gordon McCabe on behalf of Brigadier General Thomas Clingman to an unidentified general at the Charleston, S.C. 1st Military District headquarters. McCabe converys Clingman’s request for a detachment of the “German artillery” to assist with the transportation of two rifled Foote guns to Sullivan’s Island.

Charleston, October 2nd, 1863
The Brig-Gen’l. Comm’d’g directs that you will send a detachment of the “German Artillery”, with horses, to the boat, which will ar-rive at Mount Pleasant at 10′O’clock to-mor-row (Saturday) morning, for the purpose of convey-ing the rifled Foote guns to Sullivan’s Island, where they will continue their firing upon the enemy at Batteries Gregg and Wagner. There are but two (2) guns.
