Audio/Visual Materials

A gem of the Wilson Special Collections Library is its photographic, sound, and moving image holdings. Audiovisual materials related to university history are in variety of collections, with the two most important being the Southern Folklife Collection and the North Carolina Collection Photographic Archives.

Although the Southern Folklife Collection maintains materials in manuscript form, the heart of the collection is its rich body of sound, still, and moving image materials relating to American folk music and culture. The SFC publishes Field Trip South, a blog that promotes its materials and events. History on the Hill has filtered blog content related to the history of UNC here.

The North Carolina Collection Photographic Archives has spent the last several years arranging, describing, and making available the vast photographic materials of Hugh Morton. Morton (1921-2006) was a prolific photographer and spent much of his life photographing 20th century North Carolina. As a UNC alumnus, many photographs feature events on or around the university. The NCC Photographic Archives regularly publishes new finds and stunning images from the Hugh Morton Collection on their blog, A View to Hugh. History on the Hill has aggregated all posts on Hugh Morton related to UNC history here.
