08-23-1865President David Lowry Swain's daughter, Eleanor, married Union General Smith B. Atkins in Chapel Hill. According to University historian Kemp Plummer Battle, Atkins was "a man of fine appearance and of high character," but neither Chapel Hill residents nor North Carolinians in general approved of the marriage.
