There is news today that Ida Howell Friday, widow of former UNC President William “Bill” Friday, passed away on Monday.  She was 97.  Bill Friday encouraged Hugh Morton to donate his photographic archive to the North Carolina Collection.  There are a handful of images of Ida Friday in the online Hugh Morton collection, one of which can be seen below.  An online obituary can be read at the News and Observer website.

  1. Never seen such heavily decorated suit coats as worn by Hunt, Green and their seatmate! … I think the large Tar Heel team-picture pinback is in the collection….

  2. The unidentifiable man next to Jimmie Green is a legislator from Durham. Sorry, I can’t summon his name.

  3. I took a quick moment to looking at photographs of Nick Galifianakis and I don’t think it is him, so he’s maybe a different Durham politician. When I zoomed in one thing did catch my eye, though: the pin back button that he, Ida Friday, and Jimmy Green (and it looks like others) are wearing: it reads, “North Carolina / Final Four / 80-81 / Tar Heels.” I noticed the button before, but I hadn’t noticed the date range. I looked at the scans made from the other negatives on that strip of film that aren’t online, and one frame shows a Louisiana State player and what looks like a Virginia player in the background. Looking into Final Four history, LSU played Virginia during the National Third Place Game played in Philadelphia on March 31, 1981. LSU did not appear in the 1982 tournament. I don’t know the source of the initial identification being 1982 in the Superdome, but that date and location now seem to be incorrect.

  4. Someone sent me an email identifying the man on the right of Jim Hunt and Jimmy Green as N.C. Rep. George Miller (D-Durham), who served from 1971-2000 in the General Assembly and “loved Carolina (UNC BA 1950, JD 1953). He died in 2021.” He also mentioned that the man in upper left looks like Durham lawyer Travis Porter, “who handled some of Dean Smith’s personal matters, and the man behind and to the right of Ida looks like UNC Dean Donald Boulton.”
