About North Carolina’s Hodges-Sanford gubernatorial succession: Terry Sanford was elected in 1960, following Luther Hodges, who had been elected lieutenant governor in 1952 and became governor in 1954 on the death of incumbent William Umstead. (Until a 1977 referendum amended the state constitution, N.C. governors were prohibited from succeeding themselves.)
