Isabel Zuber. Salt. New York: Picador, 2002.

Set in the fictional mountain town of Faith, N.C. at the turn of the century, Salt is the story of Anna Stockton, an independent young woman who dreams of a better life away from home, and her unlikely husband, John Bayley, an older man consumed by status and greed. Zuber pays close attention to historical detail, providing a careful description of domestic life in the North Carolina mountains in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. There is a town named Faith in Rowan County, however, the setting of Zuber’s story clearly takes place much farther to the west.

What a truly amazing book! I want to write to Ms. Zuber and tell her how much her book drew me into Anna’s life-but I don’t know how to contact her. My grandmother was a woman with an education that married my grandfather and lived life on a tobacco farm w/five children during the Depression. I have often thought I’d like to write her story, and Ms. Zuber has written it in Salt. I felt as if I knew all of her characters personally; grieved when she left her mountain home, and was stunned to learn that she was only 40 when she died. Her life was so full and intense, so strongly-lived that I felt she must have been much older. Ms. Zuber, I am a voracious bibliophile and my hat is off to you. Your book is now in my top 10 list, please, please keep writing and share your gift with us.
    Gratefully,
    Marie

Contact information for some authors can be found in places like local phone books, but probably the best way to contact any author is through their current publisher. Most publishers have an an email address and/or an address where you can send snail-mail specifically for their authors.
