Updates (Dec. 22, 2009 – twice): Late donations have boosted the final book drive total to 2,332 2,377 books. Thank you to all who contributed!
A campus book drive has gathered 2,096 2,332 2,377 books for pediatric cancer patients. The total was announced at the drive’s conclusion during Friends of the Library’s 17th annual Winter Stories program Dec. 10.
Honorary book drive chair Patti Thorp and her husband, UNC Chancellor Holden Thorp, presented the books to “book fairy” Kathy Humphries. Humphries heads the organization The Book Fairy, which donates children’s books to the Pediatric Oncology Clinic at UNC Hospitals in memory of her son Karl.
The book program “is a thing that kids absolutely love,” said Dr. Stuart Gold, chief of pediatric hematology and oncology at UNC in a video about the drive. “It’s hard to keep the books in stock here.”
The 2009 UNC book drive was sponsored by the University Library Diversity Committee, the Health Sciences Library, the School of Information and Library Science, the School of Education, and the School of Social Work.
The book drive is still accepting donations. To donate books or to inquire about participating as a campus partner in future efforts, contact Rebecca Vargha, librarian, Information and Library Science Library, (919) 962-8361.
