Udpate Oct. 27:  We regret that Bland Simpson will be unable to appear at this event. David Cecelski will join Scott Taylor for the Coasts of Carolina program. Cecelski, an independent historian and writer, is the author of many books about the coastal region, including: A Historian’s Coast: Adventures Into the Tidewater Past and The Waterman’s Song: Slavery and Freedom in Maritime North Carolina.

Bland Simpson, UNC professor of English and creative writing, and Scott Taylor, a photographer from Beaufort, N.C., will launch the publication of their new book, The Coasts of Carolina: Seaside to Sound Country, on Oct. 28 in the Wilson Special Collections Library.

The free public program is sponsored by the North Carolina Collection.

The Coasts of Carolina, published by the University of North Carolina Press, is a textual and visual portrait of life along North Carolina’s oceanfront and interior shores. It combines Simpson’s text and 145 color images by Taylor.

The collaboration was prompted by a twenty-five year friendship, and what Simpson and Taylor have said is a shared interest in the natural world and a deep appreciation for diverse people and places of the coast.

Simpson is Bowman and Gordon Gray Distinguished Term Professor of English and Creative Writing at UNC. He has published several previous books about North Carolina’s coastal regions. He is also a longtime member of the Tony Award-winning Red Clay Ramblers musical group.

Taylor is a photographer whose work has appeared in local, state, regional, and national magazines, publications, and galleries. He works from his studio and gallery in historic Beaufort, N.C.

Copies of The Coasts of Carolina will be available for purchase at the event courtesy of the Bull’s Head Bookshop. The book’s official publication date is Nov. 15.
