The University Library is pleased to announce the following appointments, all effective Nov. 1, 2010.
Zahra Kamarei is the new head of science libraries. In this position, she will oversee the recently opened Kenan Science Library and will work closely with the science research community to develop strategies for the preservation of and access to research data, with a special focus on chemical informatics. Kamarei will lead a team of UNC subject librarians in the sciences and will also serve as the librarian for chemistry.
Kamarei has served as math/physics librarian at UNC since 1999, and has been interim head of science libraries since August 2009. She has also held professional librarian positions at the Isfahan University of Technology in Isfahan, Iran; the University of Notre Dame in Indiana; and the Petrolite Corporation in St. Louis, Mo.
Kamarei holds a B.S. in physics and an M.L.S. with a specialty in chemical information from Indiana University.

Sara Levinson began as original cataloger, with a primary focus on monographs in Spanish, Portuguese, other languages of the Iberian peninsula, and native Indian languages of Latin America. She will also share responsibility for cataloging of English language monographs. Levinson was most recently a temporary cataloger at UNC and has also served as serials cataloger at the Tamiment Library & Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives at New York University.
Levinson holds an M.L.S. from the Palmer School of Library and Information Science at Long Island University in Brookville, N.Y. She has a B.A. in Spanish and Anthropology from Middlebury College in Middlebury, VT.

Kristina Spurgin is now electronic resources cataloger. In this position, she will catalog e-resources including e-books, databases, and Web sites. She will also oversee and manage loads of vendor records for e-resources and contribute to national authority files. Prior to her appointment, Spurgin worked in a temporary capacity as e-resources cataloger at UNC. She is an adjunct instructor and teaching fellow at UNC’s School of Information and Library Science.
Spurgin holds a B.A. in commercial art from Brenau Women’s College in Gainesville, Ga., and an M.L.S. from the State University of New York at Albany. She is also completing a Ph.D. in information and library science at UNC.
