Appointments: Associate Director of Development; Pruitt-Shanks Project Archivist

The University Library is pleased to announce two recent appointments, effective July 1, 2011.

Emily Silverman is the new Associate Director of Library Development.

Silverman will develop and implement strategies to secure major gifts in support of the mission and priorities of the Library. She will also identify and steward individual, foundation, and corporate donors.

Silverman was most recently Resource Development Director at Chatham Habitat for Humanity in Pittsboro, N.C. She was previously Director of Development and Communication at the University of Massachusetts Amherst Libraries, and has held additional positions in libraries, education, and publishing.

Silverman holds a B.A. cum laude in political science from Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass. Her M.S.L.I.S. is from the University of Rhode Island School of Library and Information Studies.

Jodi Berkowitz began as Pruitt-Shanks Project Archivist.

In this one-year position, Berkowitz will coordinate and implement processing of the Pruitt-Shanks Photographic Collection in the Southern Historical Collection. The collection consists of approximately 140,000 photographic negatives produced from the late 1920s into the 1970s by the studios of O.N. Pruitt and Calvin Shanks, of Columbus, Miss.

Berkowitz was most recently Legacy Finding Aids Archivist in the Technical Services department of UNC’s Wilson Special Collections Library. She was previously the Technical Services Archivist at Duke University’s Sallie Bingham Center for Women’s History and Culture.

Berkowitz holds a B.A. in Women’s Studies from Barnard College in New York City and an M.S.L.S. from the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
