Nearly 100 recent additions to the collections of UNC’s Sloane Art Library will be on view during a free public event there on Thursday, April 10, at 5:30 p.m.

Students from UNC’s Art and Museum Library and Information Student Society (AMLISS), along with Art Library staff, will conduct mini-presentations about their favorite acquisitions from the last year.

A particular highlight will be examples of the “photobook” genre. These are books that photographers create around a particular theme or subject, and that make creative use of the book form.

Art Librarian Heather Gendron says this is a new collecting emphasis for the Sloane Art Library, which holds photobooks from around the globe. The photobooks are part of a growing collection of artists’ books, or works of art created as books.

Among the titles on view will be: Cat’s Cradle by Julie Chen; The Afronauts by Cristina De Middel;  Las Meninas by Paul Soulellis; and Foreclosures by Bruce Gilden.

Most of the books were purchased thanks to private gifts through the Library’s gift and endowment funds.
