Four student employees of the UNC Library are the first recipients of the Student Employee Appreciation Award.
The Library recognized Landon James ’14, Libby Livingston ’15, Alex Smith ’15, and Kyree Tittle ’14 during a Library staff meeting on May 13, 2014.
The Student Library Advisory Board (SLAB) created the award in order to recognize exemplary undergraduate student employees. SLAB members select recipients on the basis of the following criteria: excellent customer service, leadership in the workplace, integrity, attitude, worth ethic, initiative, or passion. Each winner receives $500, which SLAB members have allocated from the endowment they manage.
“The Library attracts wonderful student employees who do important work every day,” said UNC University Librarian Sarah Michalak. “It is truly a pleasure to be able to recognize their contributions this way.”
Landon James, who has worked for the Library for eight semesters, was nominated by Joe Copp, from E-Resources & Serials Management.
As serials binding newspaper assistant, Landon performed serials binding quality control, checked in and itemized microfilm, and shelved and maintained newspapers and current periodicals.
Landon’s award notes his considerable attention to detail, his professional and respectful demeanor, and his accuracy and conscientiousness, such as his quick identification of lapses in the receipt of current subscriptions.
Libby Livingston, a six-semester veteran of the Library, was nominated by Jodi Mills and Claire McLendon from the Undergraduate Library Circulation and Reserves units.
As Circulation/Reserves public service desk assistant and Reserves processing assistant, Libby is often the first staff member to greet and assist library users and visitors.
Libby received the award for her courteous and knowledgeable customer service—such as her routine efforts to help users find their books in their stacks; her positive, helpful attitude; and her strong work ethic and initiative, including her efforts to make course readings available to students as quickly as possible.
Alex Smith, who has worked for the Library for four semesters, was nominated by Joe Mitchem from Davis Library Circulation.
Alex processes books for campus delivery—a highly successful service that allows faculty members to request items online and have them delivered directly to their campus mailboxes.
On any given day, Alex delivers between 10 and 70 books to faculty located in a maze of university buildings, transporting and delivering the books across campus by hand, in bags, or on pull carts.
Kyree Tittle, who has worked for the Library for six semesters, was nominated by Winifred Metz in the Media Resources Center (MRC) of the Undergraduate Library.
As a media lab assistant, Kyree patiently assisted students with editing video footage for their assignments, and calmly taught them how to use the lab’s software and equipment.
Kyree’s award recognizes his reliable service, his strong initiative and positive attitude, and his willingness to take open shifts or to fill in at the last minute.
To be nominated for a Student Employee Appreciation Award, students must be currently enrolled undergraduates and have been employed for four or more semesters by the University Library or Health Sciences Library.
Congratulations, Landon, Libby, Alex, and Kyree!
