Item Description:  In this diary entry, Rev. Overton Bernard discusses the resignation of Union Secretary of War, Simon Cameron, as well as damage to Burnside’s Fleet.

Item transcription:

Tuesday 21st Jany.  Cameron has resigned as Secretary of War after having through his friends fleeced the Government and is appointed Minister to Russia it is rumored that Chase and Welles will also resign.

The Burnsides Fleet from which the North expected so much it is thought has suffered severely from the Storm about one week since off Hatteras.

About Overton Bernard: Overton Bernard kept his diary while serving as a Methodist minister in Edenton, N.C., 1824, and as a bank employee in Portsmouth, Va., 1858-1863.
