Headquarters, District Western Louisiana
Alexandria, April 17th, 1863

Lt. Col G.W. Logan
Comdg Fort Beauregard

                    Colonel,

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your communication of the 15th inst. The Twilight brought no wood from Little River for Fort DeRussy.

With regard to the courier Edward Vidnin, spoken of by you as having deserted his station, I have given orders for him to be arrested. He has probably gone home.

From your position of Commandant of the Fort you have authority to administer the oath of allegiance to person suspected of disloyalty. If Dr. Hendry has placed himself in a position to incur suspicion, you can determine by his willingness or refusal to take the oath of allegiance to the Confederate States, what measures show be adopted towards him. He can not act in the capacity of magistrate if he has never taken the oath, nor should he be recognized as such.

Very Respectfully,

Yr obdt srvt
E. Surget
A.A. Genl.
