Item description:  Letter, dated 28 December 1863, from Eli Metcalfe Bruce, a member of the Confederate House of Representatives, to John Hunt Morgan.  Bruce congratulates Morgan on his successful escape from captivity by the Union army, stating his belief that the escape is proof of divine support for the Confederate cause, and discusses his intentions to hold a reception in Morgan’s honor.

Richmond Dec. 28, 1863

Genl Jno. H. Morgan

Danville, Va.

Our Dear General,

We are filled with profound and humble gratitude  to the Great [Overuler?] of the destiny of men for your successful escape and deliverance from the hands of your persecutors, and feel that it is an omen of His protecting hand extended to you, and through you over your gallant command.

I only now, however have time to say, that we desire to know when you will reach this city, as your friends desire to extend to you a public reception on your arrival, and thereby say to the despicable foe, that in their futile effort to degrade you before the world, that they have only elevated you in the estimation of all Confederate citizens, and the whole civilized world.

Please give us a few days notice.  Telegraph me, if you come this week.
