Spring 2023 Library Copyright Institute, Eastern and Central North Carolina Edition.

Are you a library staff member who has questions about copyright and isn’t sure where to go for answers? Are you in charge of copyright for your library and looking for guidance? The Library Copyright Institute invites you to attend a six-week program this spring to sharpen your copyright skills and help build a community to help you with copyright dilemmas.

Participation is free and online, with virtual sessions weekly for six weeks in March, April, and May, and an optional capstone event, date and time to be determined. We are aiming for this version of the Library Copyright Institute to support librarians in eastern and central North Carolina, and adjacent areas. Apply by March 20, 2023 for priority consideration as one of 30 invited participants by filling out the form available here. You can read the course syllabus, which includes the schedule for the course, here.

Costs: Thanks to funding from the Institute for Museum and Library Services, RE-246377-OLS-20, there is no registration fee.

What makes a good application: Because our goal is to provide copyright training for librarians at institutions that would not otherwise be able to develop such expertise, the strongest applicants will come from those at historically under-resourced institutions. This might include librarians at community colleges, historically black colleges, or smaller regional universities (public or private). Librarians working in all types of roles are encouraged to apply. Ultimately, we aim to admit a balanced mix of librarians working across different functional areas–e.g., public services, administration, technical services, special collections, and information technology. In total, we expect to admit a class of about 30 participants for Spring 2023.

Expectations: Because the course content is cumulative, and because this course is meant to develop a cohort of librarians and staff who share knowledge and experience, it’s expected that participants will commit to attending each of the six virtual sessions. We also strongly encourage participation in the capstone event, though we recognize that won’t be possible for all participants. Active participation during the 90-minute virtual sessions and capstone is expected.
