Uncle Sam Ervin Fan Club

This image comes from an order form for “Official National Sam Ervin Fan Club Paraphernalia,” published by the National Sam Ervin Fan Club (headquartered in Stanford, California?). The fan club offered t-shirts, posters, buttons, and even a free membership card for “fans of ‘Uncle Sam,’ Watergate-watchers, collectors of political memorabilia, and other patriotic Americans.”

For more information on Senator Sam Ervin, see a biographical sketch from the Biographical Directory of the U.S. Congress or the Washington Post obituary for Ervin from 24 April 1985.

  1. The following information comes from a newspaper clipping from the NC Collection (Durham Morning Herald, July 5, 1973). The “National Sam Ervin Fan Club” was:

-organized by Rob Caughlan (of San Mateo, Ca.)
    -announced on July 4, 1973
-profits from the sale of t-shirts, buttons, etc. were supposedly donated to organizations such as Common Cause and the American Civil Liberties Union

I couldn’t find much more on the club, but Ervin’s congressional and personal papers are in Wilson Library’s Southern Historical Collection.

  2. I would like to invite a male descendant of Senator Sam Ervin Junior to participate in a DNA study sponsored by the Irwin Clan. See http://www.clanirwin.org and click on the picture to enter, then DNA study on left.
If such a person is identified and willing to participate, it will be at my expense if they are accepted. Those interested may contact me through this reply system.

  3. I was one of the founders of the National Sam Ervin Fan Club. A small group of friends started it to support Senator Ervin’s investigation into Richard Nixon and the Watergate crimes.
We ended with with about 75,000 card carrying members. I made a speech at one of the Senator’s dinners in Mogantown and when he passed away I was honored to write a tribute to him in his hometown paper. He was a great man who stepped up when his country needed him the most.
