The Best Barbecue? Barbeque? BBQ? Bar-B-Q? Bar-B-Que?

I just read an entire article on CNN’s website called “Does your state have the best BBQ?” or the “Quest for the best barbecue” and only saw “North Carolina” mentioned once! The entire article could have been just one sentence: “Yes, my state, which is North Carolina, does have the best barbecue.”

The word “Texas” was mentioned way, way too many times.

We live in the Web 2.0 age, so CNN has provided a place for readers to comment, discuss, and argue. Plus, there’s a map showing user-submitted locations for the best barbecue. I’m equally dismayed that only one place in NC has a “red lollipop.” (Four in Tennessee? Seven in Texas? One in Minnesota? One in Massachusetts?) Take a look at the page here: “The Best Barbecue Around.”

  1. The good folks at CNN obviously don’t know what they are doing when it comes to pigs, vinegar, smoke, and the resulting major miracle that is the resulting thing we call BBQ. They better stick to covering something a little less important like wars, elections, and such.

  2. 25 years ago: New York Times food writer Craig Claiborne declares N.C. pork superior to Texas beef: “I will state unequivocally that the chopped barbecue pork sandwich served in [Lexington and Goldsboro] is by far my favorite kind of barbecue.”

  3. From a native Tar Heel son living in diaspora, I must concur. Nevertheless, the “BBQ” here in Texas ain’t half bad. In place of the traditional fixin’s of hushpuppies, fries, slaw, Brunswick stew, etc., they have jalapeno potato salad, many variations of the pinto bean, and delicious jalapeno bread.

NC BBQ is always the dark horse in these rankings — those who haven’t tried it, just don’t understand.

  4. Barbecuing and meat smoking is getting easier and easier for folks all over thanks to newer and cheaper grilling technology. What was once only available to pit masters is now entering the grasp of Joe six pack and his backyard machinery.
