Do you ever wonder what college was like back in 1841?
We don’t have a time machine to take us back, but I’ll share UNC’s “Course of Instruction” for the 1841-1842 academic year below to give you a sense of what an undergraduate faced…Virgil, Cicero, Tacitus, Livy, Homer…the list goes on!
But also differential & integral calculus, chemistry & mineralogy, navigation & surveying, constitutional law… not just the classics but a tremendous wealth of practical knowledge. (Although one could argue that classical literature gives one a fairly clear-eyed sense of how the world actually works, which is also fairly practical.)
