The NC Postcards Project Needs Your Help!

Can you identify any of the individuals in this photographic postcard?

We’ve identified the following: Josephus Daniels (first row, far left, with top hat); Governor Locke Craig (first row beside Daniels); and Edward Kidder Graham (first row, far right). You can find out more information about the card here.

I’ve got guesses on several others in the image, but I don’t want to spoil your fun. Give us your thoughts in the comments field for this post.

  1. I am guessing that this photo was taken in 1914 or 1915 because 1914 was the year President Venable was abroad for his health following the hazing incident and Edward Kidder Graham was acting president. At least I think that is right. I might be getting rusty with the dates. It has been a while.

  2. Kevin,

I think you are right about Kemp P. Battle and the date. Battle is the only other one I thought I knew. I’d really like to know the name of the person between Craig and Graham.

  3. I know you have already thought of this, but see who the commencement and University Day speakers were for 1914 and 1915. Dr. Venable didn’t die until about 1920, and as a past president, he would have been in the picture when this was taken–unless he was on his overseas trip. We know that Dr. Venable died after Edward Kidder Graham. Sooooo, I am thinking that this must have been made while Dr. Venable was recovering from the hazing incident that left him so shaken.

  4. that man standing there besaid the man with the black robe is my great great great great great great great grandfather locke Craig
