Afro-American History, Part 1 of 3: European Colonialism, Ethiopia

David Levering Lewis discusses his book, The Race to Fashoda: European Colonialism and African Resistance in the Scramble for Africa (1987), positing that historical studies of British and French colonialism frequently lack an African perspective. Hollis Lynch joins this conversation.

In the second segment [15:00 ], Joseph Harris discusses his investigation of the special relationships binding Ethiopians to contemporary Afro-Americans as participants in what he terms pan-Africanism, or the African diaspora.

At the time of this interview, Lewis, a Fellow at the National Humanities Center (1983-84) and a trustee of the Center, was professor of history at Rutgers University. Lynch was professor of history at Columbia University.

At the time of this interview, Harris, a Fellow at the National Humanities Center (1985-86), was professor of history at Howard University.
