FDR and Truman

Historian of society, politics, and the American presidency in the twentieth century William Leuchtenburg discusses the challenges Harry S. Truman faced after the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt in leading the nation through the transitions from the New Deal to Cold War politics and from a wartime to a peacetime economy.

At the time of this interview, Leuchtenburg, a Fellow at the National Humanities Center (1978-81), was professor of history at Columbia University.

This edition of Soundings was conducted by Wayne J. Pond.
