The Liberal Arts and American Higher Education

Claire Gaudiani discusses the tension between the liberal arts and practical education. She argues that a liberal education is essential to mental and moral well-being and describes methods to balance vocation and liberal education. She concludes by discussing the importance of learning foreign languages and the best methods for teaching them.

At the time of this interview, Gaudiani, a Fellow at the National Humanities Center (1980-81), was professor of French at Purdue University.

This edition of Soundings was conducted by Wayne J. Pond.
