Medieval Society and Culture

D. W. Robertson speaks on the daily life of commoners and aristocrats in the English Middle Ages, including descriptions of living conditions, the role of the church and manorial court in people’s social lives, and the status of women. Concluding, Robertson reads from the Prologue of The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer. Kent Mullikin, assistant director of the National Humanities Center, joins in this interview.

At the time of this interview, Robertson, a Fellow at the Center (1980-81), was professor of English at Princeton University.
