Politics and Dissidence

Mihajlo Mihajlov, a prisoner under Yugoslavia’s Tito regime, describes his experience as a political dissident. Mihajlov says that the difference between authoritarian and totalitarian regimes can be described as passive versus active denial of freedoms. In stating his opinions on American foreign policy, he argues that the defense of human rights must be paramount as a political goal. Mihajlov describes his fascination with the freedoms Americans enjoy and concludes by considering the future of Western democracies.

At the time of this interview, Mihajlov was a Fellow at the National Humanities Center (1980-81).

This edition of Soundings was conducted by Wayne J. Pond.
