Stoicism Through the Ages

Marcia Colish defines Stoicism as a physical and logical philosophy as well as an ethical one. She describes the history and development of Stoicism from its Greek originators in the fourth century BCE. She describes her research, tracing the uses made of Stoicism by thinkers during the classical period of Rome and the early Catholic Church fathers. She notes that interest and the study of Stoicism has changed over time, depending on the religion, the culture, and the language of those who write about it.

At the time of this interview, Colish, a Fellow at the National Humanities Center (1981-82), was professor of history at Oberlin College.

This edition of Soundings was conducted by Wayne J. Pond.
