Fiction in Modern India: Art and Politics

After decades of social and scientific progress, stereotypes about India persist. What is the role of a creative artist–a novelist–in offsetting these stereotypes? Nayantara Sahgal, the author of six novels about Indian culture and politics, discusses this question and her writing, much of which she sets in contemporary Indian society.

At this time of this interview, Sahgal was a Fellow at the National Humanities Center (1983-84).

This edition of Soundings was conducted by Wayne J. Pond.
