American Talk, Part 1 of 3

Ron Butters, Crawford Feagin, and Walt Wolfram address the subject of American speech and word usage. They ask, for example, what professional linguists say about speech and the use of words. How do Americans use English? And to what social, aesthetic, or political ends?

At the time of this interview, Butters was professor of English at Duke University. Feagin was professor of linguistics at the University of Virginia, Falls Church. Wolfram was professor of linguistics at the University of the District of Columbia.

This edition of Soundings was conducted by Wayne J. Pond.
