From Roosevelt to Reagan

In his new book, From Roosevelt to Reagan: A Reporter’s Encounters with Nine Presidents, Hedley Donovan proposes no fewer than 31 criteria for the man or woman who holds the most powerful political office in the world. At the top of this list is integrity, followed by characteristics such as fairness, self-confidence, and political vision. Yet in counterpoint to these, Donovan suggests that a successful president must be capable of political maneuvering, indirection, and a certain calculated ambiguity.
