English Art and Literature: 1650-1850

Murray Roston discusses the research for his book Changing Perspectives in Literature and the Visual Arts, 1650-1820. According to Roston, study of the art of a historical period reveals ideas and themes that occur also in the lives of people in those places and times. This is the synchronic approach, an attempt to capture the age and body of a culture, and what the Elizabethans called “the pressure of the times.”

At the time of this interview, Roston, a Fellow at the National Humanities Center (1985-86), was professor of English at Bar-Ilan University.

This edition of Soundings was conducted by Wayne J. Pond.
