Two Aspects of English Colonialism

Nicholas Canny discusses conditions in seventeenth-century Ireland that resulted in a large immigration of Irish people to America during the English colonial system. He emphasizes the influences of Irish values in the development of the new country of the United States.

In the second segment [14:00], John Seelye talks about one of the notable symbols of English colonialism in the United States—and especially New England—Plymouth Rock.

At the time of these interviews, Canny, a Fellow at the National Humanities Center (1986-87), was professor of history at University College, Galway.

Seelye, a Fellow at the Center (1983-84), was professor of English at the University of Florida.

This edition of Soundings was conducted by Wayne J. Pond.
