Religion and Language

D. W. Robertson and John Wall discuss biblical language and translation and the impact of biblical scholarship on religious language. Wall advocates the continuation of translation and scholarship surrounding the Bible to ensure its relevance despite the changing nature of language; Robertson urges caution when adjusting doctrine to accommodate philological discovery while still trusting that changes made to scriptural texts are always providential.

At the time of this interview, Robertson, a Fellow at the National Humanities Center (1980-81), was professor of English at Princeton University. Wall, a Fellow at the Center (1980-81, 2013-14), was professor of English at North Carolina State University.

This edition of Soundings was conducted by Wayne J. Pond.
