(1) Philosophy and Public Policy, Part 6 of 7: Ethics in International Politics; (2) Commentary on Values Education in American Schools

Steven Cahn, James Rachels, George Sher, and Robert Simon continue the series on philosophy and public policy, focusing on ethical and moral obligations among nations, especially where charity and aid in the developing world is concerned.

In the second segment [25:25], William Bennett comments on the argument that moral values should be taught to students in American elementary and secondary schools. He advocates that students learn through experience.

Cahn was associate director of the humanities division of the Rockefeller Foundation. Rachels was dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and professor of philosophy at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Sher, a Fellow at the National Humanities Center (1980-81), was professor of philosophy at the University of Vermont. Simon, a Fellow at the Center (1981-82), was professor of philosophy at Hamilton College.

At the time of this interview, Bennett was director of the Center.

This edition of Soundings was conducted by Wayne J. Pond.
