Patterns Called War: Military History, Part 1 of 2

James Leutze, Douglas Porch, and Samuel Williamson discuss questions on the nature and characteristics of military history. How do military historians, classical and contemporary, make sense of their subjects? To what extent do military historians offer theories of history that go beyond chronicles of warfare?

At the time of this interview, Leutze was professor of history and director of the Curriculum in Peace, War, and Defense at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Porch, a Fellow at the National Humanities Center (1982-83),  was professor of history at the Citadel. Williamson, a Fellow at the Center (1982-83), was professor of history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

This edition of Soundings was conducted by Wayne J. Pond.
