Patterns Called War: Military History, Part 2 of 2

James LeutzeDouglas Porch, and Samuel Williamson continue their conversation about military history, addressing questions such as the extent to which social movements, ideologies, and intellectual currents affect the writing of military history. In their chronicles, how do military historians assess the interplay between technology and human characteristics such as courage, honor, and duty? Should military historians offer theories or lessons that address contemporary international issues?

At the time of this interview, Leutze was professor of history and director of the Curriculum in Peace, War, and Defense at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Porch, a Fellow at the National Humanities Center (1982-83), was professor of history at the Citadel. Williamson, a Fellow at the Center (1982-83), was professor of history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

This edition of Soundings was conducted by Wayne J. Pond.
