Religion in America

Martin Marty and James Wall discuss the practice of religion in America in the mid-1980s. According to studies at the time, nearly half of the American public attended a church or synagogue every week. Where are the religious origins of this devotion, and how do American religious thought and practice manifest themselves today?

At the time of this interview, Martin Marty was a trustee at the National Humanities Center and on the faculty of the University of Chicago Divinity School. James Wall was editor of the Christian Century.

This edition of Soundings was conducted by Wayne J. Pond.
