Gail Godwin discusses her fiction, its resources, and its relationship to English and American literary traditions. She is the author of several novels, including A Mother and Two Daughters and The Finishing School, and collections of short stories.

In the second segment (14:30), Robert Coles discusses his books The Moral Life of Children and The Political Life of Children. Where do children get their moral outlooks? How do they develop moral and political loyalties? Why should parents and teachers listen to children?

At the time of this interview, Godwin was a novelist living in North Carolina.

Coles was a child psychiatrist at Harvard University.
