Rhetoric, Oratory, and Poetry in Classical Greece

In the first of two conversations in this edition of SoundingsShalom Perlman discusses Isocrates, an orator and rhetorician who was important to both politics and education in fourth-century Greece.

In the second segment [14:15], Victor Matthews discusses the fourth-century Athenian poet Antimachos, who is noteworthy not only for his own work but also as one of the first editors of the epic poetry of Homer.

At the time of these interviews, Perlman, a Fellow at the National Humanities Center (1986-87), was professor of classics at Tel Aviv University.

Matthews, also a Fellow at the Center (1986-87), was professor of classics at the University of Guelph.
