Hymnody and Power

According to Mary De Jong, nineteenth-century American hymnody provides insights into Protestant evangelicalism, forces of socialization, the importance of female religious poets, and the hymnists’ propagation of feminine values in that era.

At the time of this interview, De Jong, a Fellow at the National Humanities Center (1986-87), was professor of English at Pennsylvania State University.

This edition of Soundings was conducted by Wayne J. Pond.
