People! Great list, but you have omitted a terrific writer of many historical novels set in North Carolina!
Inglis Fletcher wrote —
The Scotswoman
Lusty Wind for Carolina
Bennett’s Welcome
Roanoke Hundred
Raleigh’s Eden
Queen’s Gift
Toil of the Brave
Men of Albemarle
The Wind in the Forest
Cormorant’s Brood
Rogue’s Harbor
and perhaps others
— all set in 17th and 18th century North Carolina and written with great attention to detail and authenticity, based on Ms. Fletcher’s extensive historical research. From 1944 on, she lived in Edenton, where many events in her novels occur, among other locations in eastern North Carolina.
She was a very popular writer, and surely ought to be included on your lists! I grew up in Chapel Hill in the 60s and 70s, and most of what I know about colonial NC history, I learned from these books!
Thanks!
Yes, Ms. Fletcher was a master of historical novels. Right now we have just about enough manpower to keep up with newly published novels. As time permits, we add postings for novels that were published earlier. Ms. Fletcher is definitely on our list of writers to add to this blog. We should have a few of her novels up before the fall. Thank you for your comment.
John Ehle is missing.
We started this blog in 2008 with the idea that we would cover newly published novels–alerting readers to what’s new. We soon learned that readers wanted to know about the classics too. Most months we have just about enough manpower to keep up with newly published novels. As time permits, we add postings for novels that were published earlier. John Ehle is definitely on our list of writers to add to this blog.
My novel Revelation (Simon &Schuster 1988) is set in Chapel Hill, and my novel Sister India (a NY Times Notable Book of the year, Riverhead 2001) is partly in NC. Please add me to your excellent list. Thanks.
Hi Ms. Payne,
Thanks for getting in touch! We started this blog in 2008 with the idea that we would cover newly published novels–alerting readers to what’s new. We soon learned that readers wanted to know about the classics too. Most months we have just about enough manpower to keep up with newly published novels, but as time permits, we add postings for novels that were published earlier. We’ll definitely get you added to our list of authors, and hopefully will be able to blog about your novels in the near future.
Where is Terrell Garren? “The Secret of War.” The best book I’ve ever read.
Terrell Garren “The Secret of War.”
Thank you for mentioning Terrell Garren and The Secret of War. We have this book in the North Carolina Collection, with a copy to read on site and a copy to loan out. We acquired it before we started this blog in 2008. As we mentioned a few comments back, we are staffed to keep up with newly published novels and only occasionally have the time to write about novels published before 2008. But we do keep a list of earlier novels that we’d like to blog about and we’ll add The Secret of War to our list.
Jennifer Thompson wrote Picking Cotton (non-fiction)
Timothy Tyson wrote Blood Done Sign My Name
Donna Campbell Smith, my favorite
What are the criteria for the list. I just pubished a collection of shrot stories from Press 53 in cotober. Check it out: press53.com
Thanks for your message, Mr. Tiner. The North Carolina Collection has your story collection, The Waterhouse. We have not included it in this blog because it is a short story collection rather than a novel. We only blog on novels set in North Carolina.
I have a wild life story, I have a lot of it written down, and it is certainly book worthy, I am looking fr someone to help me write a book…please contact at fixinglives@yahoo.com
Dear Pete,
As a library, we don’t possess the capability to publish books or represent authors. However, if you’re interested in avenues outside of traditional publishing, many of the authors who write the novels we blog on have found success using self-publishing warehouses such as CreateSpace through Amazon, Lulu, and Xlibris. Best of luck, and thanks for reading!
I can’t believe John Ehle has been overlooked. Please correct this oversight. He’s considered the father of Appalachian literature (The Land Breakers, The Journey of August King, Time of Drums, The Road, The Winter People, Lion on the Hearth, and Last One Home).
Yes, John Ehle is one of the giants of North Carolina literature, and the North Carolina Collection has all of his works. We started this blog in 2008 with the idea that we would cover newly published novels–alerting readers to what’s new. We soon learned that readers wanted to know about the classics too. Most months we have just about enough manpower to keep up with newly published novels, but as time permits, we add postings for novels that were published earlier. We’ll definitely add Mr. Ehle to the list of authors whose works we should cover.
Who wrote the book about Western NC that starts with the Vikings coming over, loosing a spearhead that somehow ends up in Western NC and then the story spins into modern days? I can’t remember author nor title. Can anybody help me with, who has a clue which book I’m talking about?
Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Any hint will be appreciated.
Interesting. Nothing comes to mind, but we will think about it and work on this for a few days. Do you have any idea when the novel was published (Past few years? Twentieth century?)
Jeff Richards’ novel, The Great Journey, Wipf and Stock Publishers, should be included. The book reads like a commentary on problems in culture today.
Thanks for the suggestion, Debbie. Updates to this blog are currently on pause in the midst of some staffing transitions. We’ve been keeping a list of titles and authors to look into when we resume updating, and we’ll be sure to add these to the list!
Thanks. I found what I wanted
Children’s #1 New York Times Best Selling Author, Audrey Penn has written three novels taking place on Ocracoke Island. Mystery At Blackbeard’s Cove; Blackbeard and the Sandstone Pillar – When Lightning Strikes; and Blackbeard and the Gift of Silence. All three novels; aimed at fifth grade and up; are filled with history and humor and make a great read. Penn’s fourth novel in the quartet: Blackbeard’s Legacy: Shared/Time, will be out in 2017. Audrey Penn is the author of The Kissing Hand series.
Thank you kindly for including me in your wonderful list. I appreciate you.
I am looking specifically for mysteries either set in N Carolina or written by NC authors.
Do you have a list of authors who come from or reside in Chapel Hill? I asked at the Chapel Hill Library, but they do not carry such a list and since I live here, I would like to read books by people who come from here. Thank you for taking the trouble.
