This morning’s Charlotte Observer reported that longtime Charlotte News photographer Jeep Hunter passed away yesterday at the age of 91.  Hugh Morton made the above portrait of Hunter circa the 1950s.  The negative is a deteriorated acetate negative, which is why the image has a mottled look and a crease in the upper right corner.

  1. So very sorry to hear of Jeep Hunter’s passing.

When I read Stephen Fletcher’s post this morning, I immediately dug out one of my scrapbooks of newspaper clippings. There among dozens of Hugh Morton images is a “Charlotte News” Jeep Hunter favorite from the late summer of 1953. The caption reads:

“Chief Choo Choo and Family in Tepee”

“Family portrait of the Charlie Justice family–taken before the breadwinner departed for Washington and his third season with the Redskins of the National Football League. The group includes wife, Sarah, son Ronnie and daughter Barbara who doesn’t seem to be happy with the prospect of Jeep Hunter’s flash bulb. The Justices reside at 2027 Coinston Place here.”

Jeep Hunter’s legendary photography, like that of Hugh Morton, is to be treasured.
